Draft Culture of Peace Programme in Mozambique 21

D.      Research, Documentation and Evaluation

The Culture of Peace must be in a permanent mode of growth and development, which requires an ongoing programme of self-reflection based upon scientific research. This research will be dedicated to the particular objectives and assess the specific activities of each project, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses, and making recommendations on that basis.

Rather than being treated as a separate project of the Programme, research, documentation, and evaluation are included as a component in every project.

The research will be carried out under subcontracts by independent Mozambican organizations such as the Center for African Studies of Eduardo Mondlane University and Institute for International Relations. By generating and supporting such institutions as well as encouraging the development of new ones, the Programme will contribute to the growth of social science research in Mozambique.

Since the Culture of Peace Programme in Mozambique is an important pilot project for the international Culture of Peace Programme of UNESCO, it is important that its development should be well documented and available for others to learn from. Thus, it is important that part of the administrative work of each project will be devoted to the task of documentation.

Research and documentation will feed into a system of evaluation to be developed in coordination between UNESCO, the Steering Committee, and the participants in the projects. This participative evaluation will be conducted frequently and used to modify and improve the Programme all along its course.

E.      International Linkages

The culture of peace requires the simultaneous development of the solidarity of people on many levels including not only the community and national, but also the global. Therefore, although the main thrust of the Programme is endogenous capacity-building, there will also be a secondary emphasis on international linkages with similar activities and projects in other countries.

Each project will have its own international partners and support for international exchange, as indicated in the various project profiles.
