--- The American Association of Counseling and Development, which represents over 50,000 counselors in the United States, formally endorsed the Seville Statement at their March convention in Boston. The endorsement was headline news in the enclosed convention newspaper. For the counselors, many of whom are working at schools and colleges, the Seville Statement can be used as a tool to "sweep away old myths" and make possible personal development within the context of creating a new world culture of peace. The endorsement came as the result of a year-long initiative by Judith Kovacs-Long of Texas (see the article by her and Elizabeth Brumage in the November, 1988 newsletter). Along the way the Statement was supported and published by various divisions of AACD, including the Association for Humanistic Education and Development, the Iowa AACD, the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, the American College Personnel Association, and the American Mental Health Counselors. Other recent organizational endorsements include the Movimiento por la Vida y la Paz in Argentina (Movement for Life and Peace) and the Research/Study Team on Non-Violent Large Systems Change of the Organization Development Institute with headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. --- The new book, Aggression and War, edited by Seville signatories do Groebel and Robert Hinde, features the Seville Statement along with scientific essays that support its five theses. The book, which has been in preparation for several years (see the February 1988 newsletter), is now available from Cambridge University Press, as per the enclosed flyer. The Seville Statement is also featured in the upcoming issue of the Journal of Peace Research where it is accompanied by a lead article that I have written, entitled, The Seville Statement on Violence: A Progress Report. Another book is underway that will trace the history of the Seville Statement. Its author, Jeffrey Goldstein, has received a grant from the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation to carry out the work. He requests that anyone with relevant materials contact him at Temple University Psychology Dept, Philadelphia, PA, 19122. Another recent publication of the Seville Statement was in the Ethical Record (UK) , October 1988 issue. --- Recent mass media attention include two articles on the Seville Statement sub- mitted by Santiago Genoves in Mexico. One is in the leading newspaper Excelsior (October 20, 1988), and the other in ICVT - Informacion, Cientific y Tecnologia IO (137): 8-9, 1988. In West Germany, the Nurnberger Zeitung of December 24, 1988 carried a major story entitled "Man Is Not by Nature Warlike and Violent", featuring quotes from Jo Groebel and a synopsis of the Seville Statement. In Australia, the Statement was used as the basis for the weekly radio program of Keith Suter, Foun- dation Director of the Trinity Peace Research Institute. Copies of the tape, as well as the articles mentioned above are available from me. --- Lack of space makes it impossible to mention all the wonderful letters from people who are using the Seville Statement in their peace-making work. Riitta Wahlstrdm has not only used it in peace education in her native Finland, but also on a lecture tour in Spain and in her work with the International Peace Research Association. Dimitra Papadopoulou has carried its message beyond her Laboratory of Education for Peace in Greece, to the borders of Turkey, to Bulgaria, and now to Paris, UNESCO, where she is working for two months. Robert Holt is using the Statement at the New York University Program on Peace and Global Policy Studies, and at his suggestion it will be distributed widely by the Laucks Foundation, Inc Perhaps the most remarkable letter came from Enoch Chitsike with the return address Chikurubi Maximum Prison in Zimbabwe where he's in a course on Problems of Humanity. --- I've applied for funding of the newsletter to the new joint US-Soviet peace foundation, the International Foundation for Survival and Development of Humanity. In the meantime, lacking other support, I must depend upon your donations to support the printing and mailing. Please make out checks to "Seville Statement on Violence."
