THE SEVILLE STATEMENT 0N VIOLENCE "The same species who invented war is capable of inventing peace." Support Network c/o David Adams, Wesleyan Psychology Dept. Middletown, Connecticut, USA, 06457 NEWSLETTER - VOLUME 5, NUMBER 2, NOVEMBER, 1990 --- This newsletter is dedicated to Dr. Taha H. Malasi and his family - wherever you may be. Dr. Malasi, a psychiatrist and signatory at Seville, was living in Kuwait at the time of the Iraqi invasion, and letters to him have been returned undelivered. This symbolizes the horrors of war, which not only destroys life and property, but also tears apart the very fabric of human relations. It underscores the need for each of us to intensify our work for a new world order of peace and justice. --- The brochure on the Seville Statement, commissioned by Unesco in May, was submitted in draft form on October 1, as specified in the contract. The next step awaits Unesco's decisions with regard to revisions, format, publication, and translation. Although detailed decisions were not yet available when this newsletter was written, a preliminary assessment was sent by Janusz Symonides, Director of the Unesco Division of Human Rights and Peace: "I am deeply convinced that your brochure will play an important role in education for peace and in the creation of a peace culture." As soon as a more detailed response is available, it will be sent, along with the draft version, to those who have expressed an interest in contributing to its development. --- Once the brochure is published, I hope that all organizations and individuals in the Support Network will take part in its dissemination and use on a mass basis. The purpose of the brochure is to make available the Seville Statement, commentary, and version in plain words to the broadest possible audience, concentrating on young people. --- As part of the brochure, the first steps have been taken to develop a network of resource contacts in countries around the world. The full list will be published in the brochure. A preliminary version is enclosed which lists 18 contacts. In addition to the countries shown, contacts are pending in Bulgaria, China. Costa Rica. Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Guatemala, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Romania, Senegal, South Africa, Sweden, Yugoslavia, and Zimbabwe. Wherever possible, contacts are associated with organizations representing scholars and scientists with expertise on the issues addressed at Seville. As this network develops, it should be possible to stimulate many local initiatives around the Seville Statement that do not depend on Paris or Connecticut. If you have suggestions for additional resource contacts. please get in touch with me. --- In addition to the Seville Statement and commentary, the Unesco brochure will contain a list of organizations that have endorsed or disseminated the Statement. The list is enclosed. If you know of any additions or corrections, please send them to me as soon as possible. --- The myth that war and violence are intrinsic to human nature is widespread. This underlines the importance of the message of the Seville Statement which is designed to clear away the myth and establish the ground on which a realistic vision of world peace can be built.
